How to Build a PC: A Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide

Phase 1: The Pre-Build Prep

Before touching any components, prepare a clean, uncarpeted workspace (like a wooden kitchen table).

  • Gather Your Tools: All you strictly need is a magnetic Philips #2 screwdriver. A few zip ties for cable management and an anti-static wrist strap are helpful bonuses.

Phase 2: Outside-the-Box Assembly

It is significantly easier to install the core components onto the motherboard before putting it inside the cramped PC case. Place your motherboard flat on top of its cardboard box.

  • Step 1: Install the CPU. Lift the small metal retention lever on the motherboard socket. Align the golden triangle on the corner of your processor with the triangle mark on the socket. Gently drop it in place (do not force it) and lower the lever.

  • Step 2: Install the RAM. Pop open the plastic clips on the motherboard’s RAM slots. Align the notch on your memory stick with the notch in the slot, and push down firmly until you hear a satisfying click on both ends.

  • Step 3: Install the M.2 SSD. Locate the small M.2 slot on the motherboard. Slide your stick-shaped NVMe SSD in at a slight angle, push it flat, and secure it with the included tiny screw or latch.

  • Step 4: Mount the CPU Cooler. Apply a pea-sized drop of thermal paste to the centre of the CPU (unless your cooler has it pre-applied). Secure the cooler bracket over the CPU according to its manual, and plug the fan wire into the header labelled CPU_FAN.

Phase 3: Bringing the Case to Life

  • Step 5: Prep the Case & Power Supply. Unscrew the side panels of your PC case. Install the Power Supply Unit (PSU) into the bottom bay and route the thick power cables out through the back management holes. Screw in the motherboard IO shield if it isn't pre-attached.

  • Step 6: Mount the Motherboard. Align the holes on your motherboard with the metal standoffs pre-installed inside the case. Secure it using the standard chassis screws.

  • Step 7: Connect the Front Panel & Power. Plug the main 24-pin power cable and the 8-pin CPU power cable into the motherboard. Connect the small case wires (Power Button, Reset Switch, Audio, and USB) to their corresponding headers at the bottom of the board.

  • Step 8: Drop in the Graphics Card. Find the top PCIe slot on the motherboard, remove the metal expansion slot covers on the back of the case, and click your GPU into place. Secure it with screws to the case frame and plug in the PCIe power cables from the PSU.

Phase 4: The First Boot (POST)

Plug the PC into the wall, switch the back of the PSU to the "I" (On) position, connect your monitor directly into the Graphics Card (not the motherboard panel), and hit the case power button.

If your fans spin up and you are greeted by the Motherboard BIOS screen—congratulations! Your build is successful. All that’s left is plugging in a USB drive to install Windows.
